but we've finally been able to get more radio shows on tape/cd from the library. Yesterday we picked up and listed to - The National Lampoon Radio Hour "Best Moments". It wasn't my favorite - by a long shock and I only found a few funny, but I'm hoping this means that the ones I've had on hold are starting to come in.

Caltech and Vroman's Bookstore are excited to present Christopher Paolini and the third book in his Inheritance series entitled Brisingr. The first book in the series, Eragon, written when Paolini was only 15, became a major motion picture. It was followed by Eldest, and now Brisingr.

Following the colossal battle against the Empire's warriors on the Burning Plains, Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have narrowly escaped with their lives. Still there is more at hand for the Rider and his dragon, as Eragon finds himself bound by a tangle of promises he may not be able to keep.

Yuk - abridged tapes

I thought I would give one a try this week and I barely made it through. Maybe it works for non-fiction, but for fiction books I can not see myself ever listening to an abridged tape again.

but once again I was subjected to once of the worst narrations ever. I've mentioned doing the Left Behind series. Well the last two books I've done have had narrations that made it an effort to get through them. I can't remember who narrated the last one. But for The Remnant it was read by Jack Sonericker and I absolutely hated it. I do hope to get a better narrator for the next installment. I so wonder what happened to the original voice.

One thing I did want to share (using Wikipedia for a source - for what that is worth) are some of the criticisms about this book/series

Controversies and criticisms
Some evangelicals are seriously concerned about the message of the genre. Their objections are based on the paucity of scriptural evidence for the Pre-Tribulation Rapture which forms the basis for the story. The supposition is that the Christian Church will not be present for the "final witness" nor need to prepare themselves in the faith for that possibility. It forms a growing basis for discussion among evangelicals who hold to a Post Tribulation Rapture, amillennialism, or forms of preterism.
Other evangelicals object to the message of Left Behind because they say it is not a Christian message, though framed as a Christian series. Loren L. Johns, the Academic Dean of the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, writes: "At the end of the day, this series is ultimately a rejection of the good news of Jesus Christ. I say this because it rejects the way of the cross and Jesus’ call to obedient discipleship and a new way of life. It celebrates the human will to power, putting Evangelical Christians in the heroic role of God’s Green Berets. ... Love of enemies is treated as a misguided strategy associated not with the gospel, but with the Antichrist."[3]
The Commission on Theology and Church Relations of the Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) reported that "the ideas expressed in the Left Behind series are in many ways contrary to the teaching of holy scripture. Though containing a fictional story line, the books promote a theology that is, in important respects, at odds with the biblical revelation."[4]
Lisa Ruby, writer of over 50 investigative articles about the Left Behind Series, and a book, God's Wrath on Left Behind, insists the novels are filled with soul-subverting messages: "My focus is not on the author's eschatological bent, but rather, the apostate thinking and behavior of the allegedly Christian characters. The Left Behind Series is conditioning people to believe that Christians may work at Satan's headquarters and even "pretend" to worship the Antichrist during the Tribulation without forfeiting their souls."[5]
Other Christians find the focus on the Rapture as a dramatic device in a "Christian" film gives too much credence to this debatable theory. Some Christians find the use of Biblical interpretations for commercial entertainment somewhat exploitive and disingenuous, in spite of the claims of some that the books and movie have helped bring new believers to Christianity.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Dave Freeman, co-author of "100 Things to Do Before You Die," a travel guide and ode to odd adventures that inspired readers and imitators, died after hitting his head in a fall at his home. He was 47.

Freeman died August 17 after the fall at his Venice home, his father, Roy Freeman, told the Los Angeles Times on Monday.

An advertising agency executive, Freeman co-wrote the 1999 book subtitled "Travel Events You Just Can't Miss" with Neil Teplica. It was based on the Web site whatsgoingon.com, which the pair ran together from 1996 to 2001

JOHN'S STORY. I finished it a bit ago and it was an Audiobook I checked out from the library (my favorite place). It is about the John in the New Testament and it written as him telling his story. Pretty interesting. I listened to it at bedtime and found it better than watching the news.

New Bout in Seinfeld Cookbook Battle

“Deceptively Delicious,” the cookbook by Jessica Seinfeld whose recipes for concealing puréed vegetables in comfort food for children bore such similarities to another cookbook’s that it inspired a lawsuit from that book’s author, shot to the top of the Amazon best-seller list on Wednesday, nine months after it was published.

The sharp rise in sales caught the eyes of both books’ publishers, who traced it to the rerun on Tuesday of an episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” that featured Ms. Seinfeld. The appearance also subsequently lifted sales of “The Sneaky Chef,” by Missy Chase Lapine, the author who is suing Ms. Seinfeld.

The books, similar in theme, content and appearance, remain inextricably tied to each other. On Amazon, shoppers viewing “Deceptively Delicious” are prodded to order “The Sneaky Chef,” and vice versa.

Left Behind Series

Life has been keeping us busy. It seems that we've had so many library videos to try to get through we haven't had time to get back to our book on tapes. I miss that because it is something we usually do as a family and I value family time.

Anyway, today was able to finish up #6 in the Left Behind series: ASSASSINS, Assignment: Jerusalem, Target: Antichrist. The middle part lagged for me but by the time I was at the end I was kicking myself for not having #7 ready. So I'm about to head to the library website and put it on hold and hope it comes in sooner rather than later.

I haven't read it yet, but plan to.

The secret policeman wasn’t smiling. It just looked like that because his false teeth didn’t fit correctly. I was relieved. If Russian writer Isaac Babel is to be believed it’s when secret policeman start grinning at you that you should begin to worry.

“Think about it,” he said as he ran his fingernails along the right lapel of a navy double breasted blazer that was miles too big for him. His eyes were dark and squinty and his skin yellowy white. He was small, grey haired and not terribly menacing.

“I’m sorry?” I said, unsure that I had heard him correctly.

He repeated his offer. “Any book in Hemingway’s library for two hundred dollars,” he said in carefully enunciated English.

I nodded to show that I had understood his proposition.

I had spent the last half hour examining the library in Hemingway’s Havana house - the Finca Vigia. There were thousands of books: first editions, engineering texts, old atlases, older dictionaries, galleys mailed to Hemingway for blurbs, review copies, gifts; many of them had been doodled over by Hemingway himself and several were extensively underlined and annotated. A bruised early copy of The Sun Also Rises was probably worth a couple of thousand and at the bar of the Ambos Mundos Hotel a man had told me that somewhere in these stacks was a signed Catcher in the Rye which I knew I could flog on eBay for at least fifty grand.

The secret policeman tapped his foot, leaned backwards and placed his left hand on a cheetah skin which had been draped over a sofa. He patted it gingerly, like an underconfident Bond villain.

The cheetah interested me. In his 1958 Paris Review interview George Plimpton had described Hemingway’s house in Havana, and this room in particular, with meticulous detail. “The walls are lined with white painted bookcases from which books overflow to the floor...Hemingway stands when he writes in a pair of oversized loafers on the worn skin of a lesser kudu.” Opposite the writing desk and directly in Hemingway’s field of view Plimpton noted “an armoire with a leopard skin draped across the top.”

Apart from the books, papers, bull fight posters and letters, Hemingway’s home was dominated by hunting trophies. Plimpton observed dead animals everywhere - skinned, mounted, stuffed and yet more carved from wood and ivory. He also found random bags filled with shotgun shells and carnivore teeth. Hemingway’s writing desk is still opposite the armoire but strangely Plimpton’s leopard skin has metamorphosed into the hide of a cheetah. The animals are difficult to mistake. Their pattern of spots, heads, and bodies are completely different and this beast currently being drummed upon by the secret policeman’s chubby fingers was definitely not a leopard.

Summer Reading Contest. Every Monday from June 23 to August

Kick off the Summer Reading Program with a creative one:
Decorate a Visor. You will receive one visor to be
decorated anyway you want. Be creative, show the world the
real you are when you take it with you to wear on your

Get your passport stamped in Japan with Taiko Drumming.
Enjoy this hands-on experience while you learn about
Japanese culture and the Taiko drum. (July 8 @ 2:00)

Next, get your passport ready for the Caribbean! This
Multicultural Dance program will teach dances from Cuba,
Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Brazil. (July 29 @ 1:30)

FINALE. How good are your hunting skills? How well do you
know your library? This is your chance to find out in the
First Annual Library Scavenger Hunt. Open you eyes and look
for all those little things you didn’t know we had!

We've finally finished up Book 2 of the Genesis of Shannara Trilogy. I am looking forward to Book 3. Imagine my dismay when I went to the author's webpage and found out that the 3rd book - The Gypsy Morph is not expected until August of this year. Luckily we have two other audiobooks here to listen to during family listening time. We started My Sister's Keeper and so far it sounds like it will be good.
